Some of the north-east’s top musicians returned once again to Royal Deeside for more Deeside Sessions to play and celebrate the heritage of Scottish traditional music. Live music sessions took place in various pubs and hotels in Royal Deeside as part of our special two month programme, from the end of July through August and September. All musicians were welcomed to come along and join in the sessions.

Organised by the Royal Deeside & Cairngorms Destination Management Organisation (DMO), the sessions are informal music which are open to all. Most of the the musicians live and work and play in the Deeside area. Musicians such as Paul Anderson and David Anderson played at a number of the sessions.

The Deeside Sessions - What is a session? There is no strict definition of a “session”. They are essentially informal music get-togethers with traditional musicians and singers to play tunes and songs together. The Deeside Sessions 2011 gave visitors to Royal Deeside an authentic experience of North East Scotland’s indigenous musical culture. Musicians and singers are welcome to come along and take part in an informal atmosphere.

Royal Deeside has historic musical connections, fiddler James Scott Skinner was born in Banchory and is often described as ‘the greatest fiddle exponent and composer of Scottish Music’. The area also has a strong singing and piping tradition. The Deeside Sessions events celebrate Royal Deeside’s musical roots and give visitors a memorable experience of the area.
